Chapter Twenty-Four

“You have a customer,” I tell Sam. He doesn’t rise to the sound of the front door jingle.

“I don’t care.”

“Go ahead.”

“I want to finish this conversation.”

“I’ll be here when you get back. But I won’t talk to you until you walk out there and talk to her.”

Because I know who it is. I haven’t been here as long as Sam, but I know this place, instinctively somehow.

He rises and looks back at me as he unlocks the door. He leaves it open, allowing me to hear the conversation beyond.

“Is he still here?” Becky asks, voice a little more firm than last night, but still like papier mâché in audio form.

“He’s here.”

She says something I can’t make out.

Sam’s voice I can discern. “You don’t deserve this, Becky.”

The crying starts then. “I know,” is the only phrase not drowned by her sobs.

“You can leave him,” Sam tells her. “Start over.”

Her sobs come deeper and faster, and I can understand even less of what she’s saying. Standing at the door, like I was last night with the buck knife, all I can make out is “kids,” “good father,” and “not his fault.”

“Are you sure?” Sam asks. A pause, and then he adds, “Let me see if he’s up. Go on back to your room. Someone will come get you.”
